DIY Ghetto Softbox (less than $3)

Disclaimer: I am not to be blamed if this project goes horribly wrong or if you receive strange looks when using this in public. Attempt at your own risk.


1. Find yourself some:

  • tape
  • cereal boxes 
  • scissors
  • translucent material (preferably parchment paper)
  • ruler
  • marker/pencil
  • any white material (for the inside of the softbox, if needed. i used sticker paper heh)

2. Measure the dimensions of your flash (since the softbox will be mounted on the flash). Leave about 1cm allowance. You don’t want it to be too snug.

3. Cut out the 4 trapezoid-shaped pieces depending on how big a softbox you want to make. For an external flash with a sensor in front to help in focusing, you may want to avoid covering that area. Mine is roughly 4.5 inches in height and it’s already having some trouble focusing.

4. Secure the pieces together with whatever. I used tape. You can use glue, sticky tac, etc. Don’t forget to cut out a piece of parchment paper (or any translucent material) for the front!

5. Since the inside of my cereal box is gray, I stuck white sticker paper all along the inside. It doesn’t need to be neat, just enough to bounce the light out onto the parchment paper.

6. Mount that shit and enjoy!
